If you’ve had a browse of our shelves or scrolled through our website, you’ll have spotted the distinctive wolf logo of Millies Wolfheart dog food sitting proudly among our dry and cold pressed ranges. It’s one of those brands that, once you understand the story behind it, makes complete sense why a specialist shop like ours chooses to stock it. So we thought it was about time we gave it the proper spotlight it deserves.
The Story Behind Millies Wolfheart Dog Food
Millies Wolfheart was founded in 2011 by Mark and June, a husband and wife team from Yorkshire with over twenty years of experience keeping large breed working dogs. Like a lot of owners of working and sporting dogs, they’d spent years battling digestive sensitivities and trying commercial food after commercial food without much luck. Rather than keep compromising, they decided to formulate their own. Their first recipe launched in September 2012, and the brand has grown steadily ever since, now recognised as one of the top rated British working and sporting dog food producers.
We love that story because it’s exactly the kind of thing we hear from customers walking through our own door every week. Someone with a dog that just doesn’t do well on the food everyone else seems to swear by, looking for someone who actually understands why.
What Makes Millies Wolfheart Dog Food Different
The thing that sets Millies Wolfheart dog food apart from a lot of supermarket and mainstream kibble is how deliberate they are about what goes into the bag, and just as importantly, what doesn’t.
Their recipes are gluten and grain free, and they steer clear of chicken and eggs too, both of which the brand has found contribute to intolerances in a good number of dogs. Meat and fish content across the range runs from around 40 percent right up to 80 percent, which is considerably higher than a lot of the more processed options on pet shop shelves. On the manufacturing side, they use a low temperature extrusion process designed to preserve more of the natural nutrients in the ingredients rather than cooking them away, something you don’t often hear talked about in this end of the market.
It’s not about chasing buzzwords for the sake of it. It’s about understanding ingredients and the effect they actually have on a dog’s digestion and overall condition, which is a philosophy we can very much get behind here at BTB.
A Range for Every Kind of Dog
One of the things we appreciate most about Millies Wolfheart is that it isn’t a one size fits all brand. There are mixes built around different protein ratios and life stages, from the Utility fish based mix through to higher energy options like Peak Performance, plus lower fat choices for dogs who need to watch their waistline. There are wet food for fussier eaters, and 90/10 training treats for anyone working on recall or general obedience in the park.
As an example, our Millies Wolfheart Utility (50/50) 12kg, made with white fish, vegetables, fruits, herbs and botanicals, plus a touch of salmon oil, sits at £56.99 (correct at time of the post going live) and works out as excellent value once you factor in how far a bag of this quality actually goes.
Whether you’ve got a working cocker who’s out mantrailing three times a week, a canicross partner who needs the calories to match the miles, or a much loved sofa companion who just needs a good quality dinner, there’s genuinely something in the range worth looking at.
Why We Choose to Stock It
We’re not the “one true way” kind of shop, and we never will be. We know raw feeding isn’t for everyone, dry food isn’t for everyone, and every dog and every household is different. What we do believe is that you can only feed the best you can, whatever that looks like for you and your dog, and our job is to help you find something genuinely good within that.
Millies Wolfheart dog food earns its place on our shelves because it gives dry feeders a genuinely high quality, high meat option that doesn’t rely on the cheap fillers a lot of budget kibbles lean on. For owners who’ve mentioned sensitive tummies, itchy skin, or a generally fussy eater at the till, it’s often one of the first things we’ll suggest they try, alongside a proper chat about what else might be going on.
If you’d like to have a look at the full range, you can find our current stock of Millies Wolfheart dog food on the website, including the Utility (50/50) 12kg we mentioned above. As always, you’re welcome to pop into the shop at Newton Farm and have a proper conversation with us about which mix might suit your dog best, no pressure and no hard sell, just honest advice. We are also full supported by Millies Nutritional team to make sure that your dog is on the right mix.
If your dog has an existing health condition, known allergies, or you’re ever unsure whether a change of diet is right for them, it’s always worth having a quick chat with your vet first. We’re always happy to help you think it through, but we’re not vets, and any dog with ongoing symptoms deserves a proper veterinary opinion alongside our nutrition advice.
